Symptoms of a hernia
The most common sign of a hernia is a lump or bulge that may become more noticeable when standing, coughing, or straining, and may be accompanied by aching or discomfort in the area. Not every hernia causes symptoms, and some are found incidentally during examination for another reason.
Do all hernias need surgery?
Not necessarily — some small, symptom-free hernias can be safely monitored (“watchful waiting”). Mr Cockbain will assess your individual hernia and discuss whether surgery is advisable, and if so, when.
Hernia repair surgery
Surgery is often required to fix a hernia, and a mesh may be used to strengthen the weakened area. The operation may be performed keyhole (laparoscopically) or through a small open incision, depending on the type and size of hernia. Most patients go home the same day.
Recovery after hernia repair
Recovery time varies depending on the type of repair and the individual patient, but many people are back to light activity within a couple of weeks. Mr Cockbain will talk you through what to expect for your specific procedure at your consultation.
