ANDY COCKBAIN

GENERAL SURGERY

GALLSTONES

Gallstones are a common cause of upper abdominal pain. They are diagnosed on ultrasound scan, and may require surgery to remove the gallbladder.

Mr Cockbain is an experienced gallbladder surgeon. He performs this operation “keyhole” and patients will usually go home the same day.

HERNIAS

A ‘hernia’ occurs when an internal part of the body pushes through a weakness in the muscle or surrounding tissue.

Hernias are common in the groin (inguinal), belly button (umbilical or paraumbilical), or through old scars (incisional).

Surgery is often required to fix a hernia, and a mesh may be used to strengthen the area. The operation may be performed ‘keyhole’ or through a small cut, and patients will usually go home the same day

ENDOSCOPY

An upper GI endoscopy (also known as gastroscopy, or OGD) is an important investigation for patients with swallowing difficulty, heartburn or indigestion. It is also an important test to identify or rule out cancers.

Mr Cockbain’s experience in the treatment of acid reflux, hiatus hernias and upper GI cancers means that you will get the best advice about your endoscopy results and whether any further tests or treatment are required.
